Furniture Design Program

Overview

Furniture Design Program was a new specialty, founded in 2004. In September 2005 it began its first enrollment of undergraduate students.

Although it is a new specialty in the college, furniture design courses had early begun since 1980's. In 1984, several students took furniture design as the topic of their graduation design. Then there are furniture design projects every year in Industry Design Department, Architecture and
Environment Design Department as well as Integral Design Department.

Besides that, College of Design has forged strong bonds with the furniture industry, enjoying long time cooperating relationship with Lianbang Group, Gaoshang Furniture Company, etc. , which has well prepared for the setup of our specialty.

Courses in Furniture Design Program are divided into 3 stages: the first stage emphasizes on cultural, theoretical and historical studies; based on the first stage, second stage goes into the skill training of furniture design (mainly in the workshops of the college); while the third stage is about projects, which are under tutor's instructions and with core of creativity training (both in school and the outside practising base). The most distinctive feature is that workshops become the most important "classroom" for students. Student have their own working space in the workshop, they can explore a range of processes covering from drafting, CAD, modeling, to product outcome, so that get the understanding of furniture design as a whole.

We also appoint experts from industry to take on courses in our specialty, by which can provide the invaluable "insider" knowledge to students.

The courses are structured in combining education, research and practice, aiming on the urgent needs by furniture industries in the Pearl Delta. We are always looking to be a leading specialty in South China with the best course arrangement.

Education Target
Our aim is to educate professionals who are of social responsibility and creativity, familiar with contemporary situation and future prospect, knowledgeable in product manufacturing and marketing, confident in theoretical and technical skills that essential to the contemporary.

Specialty & Teaching Staff
By present, Furniture Design Specialty mainly offers BA (hons) and MA courses in Furniture Design. We have 3 academic staffs including, 1 associated professor and 2 teaching assistants.

Resources & Facilities
In pace with the construction of Guangzhou University Town, the facility of our department has been qualitatively improved.

Depends on the course schedule, students can utilize our sharing labs like modeling studio, advanced computer lab, photographic studio, etc, as well as three libraries between two school sites to assist your learning. We also appoint tutors who are distinguished experts in related fields to be our visiting lecturers.

Besides that, our local industry-cooperated base provides you resource with part time opportunities and research projects.

Degrees & Certificates
We offer both BA(hons) and MA(hons) degree courses to nationwide. Currently, there are 30 BA (hons) students in this specialty.
