Overview

Art & Craft Design specialty has been established for almost 5 decades, going through "pattern program" during South China Art School since 1953, sub-branched to Art & Craft department (1958), Lacquer painting specialty(1970),decorative arts specialty (1984), Art & Craft design specialty (1989), and was formally named "Art & Craft Design Department" in 1996
 
 Based on esthetic foundation, this specialty introduces
our students to the practice of contemporary applied arts. Students can access to a wide range of materials and techniques so that they can become a proficient design maker with a strong creative identity.

Craft existed when humans existed. Undergoing a tremendous development and refine process in the twentieth century, we all agree that craft is a cross specialty between art and design. Human are rebuilding their view of historic aesthetics, view ofcreative coexistence, and view of decorative arts; these are also building blocks of Art & Craft Design

Established on view of historic aesthetics, this specialty has esthetic foundations, including concrete art, imaginary art, and abstract art. Historical and theoretical materials of the specialty covers not only worldwide craft heritage, but also art and design aspects.From the decorative point of view, we spendconstant effort on craft creating with decorative laws
and materials, yet we emphasis the meaning of the craft design to integrate the ideality of truth, honesty,and beauty.

Education Target
Established on creativity coexistence, we focus on broadening foundation, training knowledgeable, cooperative, creative and integrative professionals.

Specialty & Teaching staff
 By present, Department of Arts & Crafts mainly offers BA (hons) and MA courses in Arts & Crafts Design specialty. We have 12 academic staffs including 2 professor, 5 associated professors, 3 lecturers as well as 2 teaching assistants. Among the staff, 1 has doctor degree, 2 are back from oversea
education.

Resources & Facilities
In pace with the construction of the University Town, facilities of our specialty have been qualitatively improved. The well-equipped workshops will provide opportunity for our students to work in ceramics, metal, paints and mineral pigments, investigating the possibilities of each in depth. Also, we arelooking to extend our workshops depending on the teaching schedule.

Degrees & Certificates
 We offer both BA (hons) and MA (hons) degree courses to nationwide. Currently, there are 180 BA (hons) students and 19 MA (hons) students in thisspecialty.
