Overview

 Fashion Design specialty was founded in 1986 as a sub-branch under Department of Arts and Crafts. Being approved by the Academy, "Fashion Design Department" was founded in 1996, and had another new specialty "Fashion Design & Engineering" in 2002.By then, Fashion Design Department has expanded to a forefront department that has a distinguished national reputation and offers one of the
most diverse and comprehensive ranges of courses in fashion design education.

 Compare with other domestic similar academies, our emphasis lies firmly on combining theory and practice. We forged strong bonds with fashion industry in the Pearl Delta, which is one of the most inspiring environment around the nation, and play an important role in supporting its development. Benefited from our successful education concept, students are equipped with strong heart and market-oriented insight. Some of them develop their own brands or
cooperating brands, most of which proved to be quite
success, they are--01'graduate Bu Hongxia developed
her own brand named "Ai'Ru";01'graduate Dai Shanshan, set up Guangzhou Yixun Finery Ltd., with brand named "Ai'Fan";02'graduate Deng Huacheng, named his own brand "Chuang Yi Tang".  

Another feature of our department is the close link with the world, which we are constantly seeking to expand upon .Along ten some years, besides inviting quite a lot of distinguished experts to take on courses for our students, we projected an extensive range of communication activities with colleges
across the world in high levels, which include: in 1993, course leader Prof. JiaYun represented our dept. to give lectures in HONGKONG POLYTENIC UNIVIRSITY, undertook cultural and educational  communications with TAI WAN SHIH CHIEN
UNIVERSITY, FUJENCATHOLIC UNIVERSITY,etc. In 2002, we carried out exchange programme with Central Saint Martines, and set up academic links with London College of Fashion; gave lectures to "Integral Design Workshop" of Stuttgart College of Design.  

Additionally, our students had excellent performances
in top worldwide competitions, reflecting our outstanding achievement in design education that has reached international level. We proudly lis the awards our department received in the past ten years: in 1994,tutored by JiaYun, He Jidan, Chen Jiajian, 5 students were selected in "Smirnoff International Fashion Award", one of them ,Liang
Mingwei, won "the best work" around China, then represented China to attend the international competition in Ireland, which gained worldwide reputations; In 2005,05'guaduate CaiXingyun, with her exceptional graduation design, was awarded "the 5th Edition Global Garment Fashion & Accessories Design Scholarship Competition" one and only
Full Master Scholarship in fashion design in Domus Academy,Italy.

Furthermore, we have done a deeply comparison between the historical and modern industrial materials, referred to the latest information with international scope, and absorbed the most essential elements to apply to our teaching process, by which ensure students to keep aware of the latest demands and trends, and stand on the forefront within the fashion design and apparel industries.

With fast development of fashion-related industry all over the nation, especially after entry to WTO, the existing framework of specialist education can no longer fulfill society's demand for professionals that are both innovative in fashion design and competent in fashion management and engineering. Under this background, "Fashion Design and Engineering" specialty pathway was set up in 2004 to fill in the blank. Based on the tremendous resource of Design College, as well as referring to the relevant courses in fashion engineering of science colleges all around the world, the new specialty is built to be a forefront and integrated specialty with much growing potentials, which has profound social and historical impacts. In this new specialty ,we place much stress on students' practical abilities, conduct live projects in a number of teaching programmes, by which we are passing on invaluable "insider" knowledge to students on the latest knowledge, techniques and trends in all processes of fashion industry, especially in fashion management, marketing and commercial operation, which are much sought after by industry.

Further more, we are determined to go on indepth
research on skills and cultures of Chinese traditional
costume, by which sustain and enhance our quality to undertake responsibility to hand down our cultural heritage to our new generations and make a significant contribution in today's global trend.

Therefore, an efficient system that combining practical and theoretical skills and supported by modern technique and understanding of the cultural context has come into being. Base on this, we are looking for ways to better arrange related course and teaching staff when building "workshop system"
with strengthening specialist feature at same time.

Education Target
The courses have been developed to meet the need for graduates with a broad understanding of fashion, specialist vocational knowledge and skills including fashion design ,brand founding, fashion educating and researching etc., but perhaps most importantly, the ability to adapt to the demands of the ever-changing environment and be innovative .

The success rate of our graduates gaining fashion- related employment is high, reflecting both the department's reputation for excellence in fashion education and the fact that this is recognized by the industry.

Specialty & Teaching Staff
 By present, Department of Fashion Design includes
2 specialist pathways: Fashion Design and Fashion Design & Engineering. We have 7 academic staff including 2 associated professors(both are master supervisors), 3 lecturers as well as 2 teaching assistants.

Recourses & Facilities
After the improvement in 2001 when advanced multi-media fashion studio was built,and a huge jump in along with the construction of college town in 2004, we provide a much better learning conditions to support the activities in fashion design education, which are: Sewing Studio,Practice Lab,Weaving
Studio,Material Lab,Ironing Room,Knitting Fashion Lab. All these studios can serve both students in Fashion Design and Fashion Design & Engineering pathways at the same time.

Besides that, in our Changgang Dong school site, there a 180 square meter space that can serve 30 students, which is available for postgraduates students and other students of further studies.

Degrees & Certificates
 We offer two levels of education: honors degrees
and certificated degrees.

1 Honours Degree Courses:
We welcome nationwide applicants to apply for 4-year BA(hons) degrees and 3-year MA(hons) degrees. Currently, there are 270 BA (hons) students (240 in fashion design pathway, 30 in fashion engineering pathway) and 12 MA(hons) students enrolled. Also, in the 2-year "postgraduate courses"
that held by GAFA , as well as the 3-year MA(hons) courses, we undertake the responsibilities in providing specialist education in fashion design.

2 Certificated Degree Courses
At present, we offer to all over the nation 1-year senior further education and professional development courses, which aim at BA(hons) graduates who want to progress their abilities in practice. This oneyear program includes 8-10 courses. Students finish all courses with passing grades will get their certificates.
