Industrial Design Department

Overview

Industrial Design specialty was founded in 1980,converted from Ceramic Art Class under Art & Crafts Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art. Along with the graduation of our first graduates in 1984, we became one of the first national academies that offer this course. Being
approved by the Academy, Industrial Design specialty became today's Industrial Design Department in 1996.

This department has forged strong bonds with the industries. We have long time cooperating relationship with Midea Electronics, Kelon Electronics, TCL Group, Double Fish Sports, Reebok Asian, Lenovo Group, Guangzhou Traveling Department, etc. The commercial links enable us to integrate work placements and conduct "live projects" with market in a number of taught programs. After twenty some years' development, we became one of the most influential industrial design educating group in Pearl Delta or even in the whole nation. Numerous trained design professionals graduated from our college are contributing our society.

In the past few years, our students had excellent
performance in both nationwide and worldwide competitions like Haier design competition, TCL college students design competition, Reebok international design competition, Kelong new century refrigerator design competition, Feiyada
design competition, Huataihub cap design contest, THIX watch design contest, Braun design contest, etc. Research projects conducted in our department also received many awards. In '05 Braun Prize design contest, we had three designs rewarded Chinese best design; among these three,
"Emergency Bed," designed by He Peibin's group, was the only Asian design received the title of the best 24 global designs.

Education Target
We follows the concept of "Great morality, deep foundation, strong ability, easy adaptation" to educate every single student. Our aim is to educate professionals who are familiar with national situation, knowledgeable with industrial producing and marketing, confident in the theoretical, creative andtechnical skills essential to the contemporary.

Specialty & Teaching Staff
By present, Department of Industrial mainly offers specialist pathway of industrial product design. We have 20 academic staffs including 1 professor, 5 associated professors, 2 lecturers as well as 5 teaching assistants, and appoint 5 specialists (including foreign guest professors) who have worldwide reputations as our guest professors.

Resources & Facilities
In pace with the construction of Guangzhou College Town, the facility of our department has been qualitatively improved.

Depends on your course schedule, you can utilize our sharing labs like modeling studio, advanced computer lab, photographic studio, ceramic studio, etc., as well as three libraries between two school sites to assist your learning.

Besides that, our local industry-cooperated base provides you resource with part time opportunities and research projects.

Degrees and Certificates
We offer both BA(hons) and MA(hons) degree courses to nationwide. Currently, there are 160 BA (hons) students, of which 98 are in multi-media design pathways, 62 are in animation pathway, and 4 MA(hons) students in Animation and Forming research pathways. Additionally, in the 2-year
"postgraduate courses" that held by GAFA , as well as the 3-year MA(hons) courses, we undertake the responsibilities in providing specialist education in ceramic design.
