Overview
The Design College was originated from "Graphic Group" of
the South China Art School. Then South China Art School was
renamed as the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (GAFA). In 1958,
the"Graphic Group" converted into the Arts & Crafts
Department and started to grant bachelor's degrees.
Since 1978, the Art & Crafts Department
started to take in post-graduate students. In 1989, the Art & Crafts
Department was reconstructed into Art & Crafts Department
and Design Department. Nine years later, three more departments
were added; these five departments formed Design College.
The design programme has 27 years' experience of
master degree education since 1978. The first master degree
was granted in 1983.
On the programme side,"design programme" was
listed the only provincial key programme in this field among
all other academies in Guangdong.
During the 80's, led by two generations of predecessors:
Gao Yong Jian, Tan Chang, Chen Yu Tian, Li Li Ji, also
Yin Ding Bang and Wang Shou Zhi, the design programmes
have been following the pulse of
local economic development, also the need of modern design
education reformation. From introducing the "Three Constructivism" to
setting up the modern design education system, from recasting
the art & crafts department to the successful practice
of"Manufacture-Education-Research Cooperation" mode
in modern design education, our design programmes have always
been the pioneer of all congeners in China. As a result,
several evolutions of China modern design education were
related with the movement in the design
programmes of GAFA :
- The origination of"Three Main Constructivism" courses
in China - the landmark of China modern design education;
- The origination of the modern industrial
design theory of China;
- The origination of the successful"Manufacture-Education-Research
Cooperation" mode in China modern design
education.
Based on its preeminent contribution to China modern
design education, in 1995, the first summit forum of
design education"China Cross-century Conference of
Design Higher Education" was held in GAFA.
Under the development for five decades, the design programmes in GAFA
have been expanding healthily. At present, Design College is formed by seven departments,
two design programmes, 16 specialty
pathways, and a uniform platform of design foundation-- the
Foundation Programme.
Departments:
-Architectural and Environmental Art Design Department (including
specialty pathways of Architecture, Interior Design and Landscape

Programmes of Design College covered almost all existing design fields
nationwide. It's one of the most integration-oriented design colleges, which has
excellent comprehension and forecast of design
education.
In recent years, Design College has been dedicated to
prop up burgeoning fields under the prospering need of
local society. With experienced specialties from the original
department, new specialties like Architecture Design,
Digital Art Design, Fashion Engineering Design and Furniture
Design has been initiated.
Design College currently has one provincial key specialty,
the Constructivism, and five key subspecialty courses.
These key courses are all required to meet the standard
of"excellent specialty contents, excellent teaching
materials, excellent leader and ladder." Productions
from these courses include teaching materials (both
printed and electronical), specialty contents, faculty,
demonstrate works, course regulations and exchange programmes.
Key courses are funded by GAFA. A specific part from Key Courses Fund
is designated for publishing Design Series ,which was in charge of Prof.
Yin Ding Bang, including 9 theoretical books , 4 translation
works, 14 text books, and 3 work collections. The accomplishment
of Design Series has filled up an academic blank in
mainland China, representing the leading steps of Design
College in advancing through
education and research. At present, Design College is hatching
a Design Education Series, which will include 30 translations
of worldwide classic text books, 5 books of design foundation
series, 8 graduation design collections, 10 books of
special topic project series, and 10 books of Young
